Belize City - Hankook Verdes enter the RFG cup playoffs as the No.1 seed in the BPFL with 27 pts, after completing the regular season with a 1-1 draw with the Belize Defense Force at the MCC garden on Sunday. Verdes will meet 4th ranked BDF at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Sunday, February 17, while the defending champs FC Belize, ranked 2nd, host 3rd ranked Wagiya at the MCC. Verdes will meet all 3 playoff contenders in a double round robin format over the next 6 weeks to determine who makes it to the finals.
The BDF took the early lead in Sunday’s match when a hand ball error by Verdes’ defender Wilhelm “Locho” Coye as BDF striker Deon McCauley attempted to cross the ball into the goal area, caused the referee to rule penalty. McCauley converted with practiced ease to give the BDF a 1-zip lead in the 42nd minute of play.
Dion “Pussy” Flowers and Brazilian Marcos Souto tried to make it 2-zip for the BDF in the 2nd half, but none of their tries posed any real challenge for Verdes’ goalie Shandy Wagner, while Verdes’ 2nd half substitute Danny Jimenez tried to get the equalizer.
The Jimenez brothers mounted a triple pronged assault on the BDF goal that eventually paid off in the 88th minute when Ricky Jimenez connected with a cross from Danny to tap in the equalizer, and the visitors settled for the 1-1 draw at the long whistle.
F.C. Belize added 3pts to tie with Verdes with 27pts also after they cemented Santels’ place in the BPFL cellar with a 2-zip drubbing at the Norman Broaster Stadium last Saturday night, on strikes by Jerome “Jaro” James in the 46th and 85th minutes.
Wagiya added 3pts to finish their season in 3rd place with 26pts after they squeaked by Georgetown Ibayani 3-2 at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium last Saturday night.
Ibayani got on the scoreboard first on a strike by Dion Burgess in the 60th minute; then Wagiya’s Maynard Nunez tied thngs up at 1-1 in the 67th minute and Jerome Archer it it 2-1 for Wagiya in the 71st minute.
Ibayani remained in contention as Otis Martinez equalized the score at 2-2 in the 72nd minute, then Wagiya’s Aaron McLaughlin nailed home the winning goal in the 75th minute.
The San Pedro Dolphins picked up an easy 3pts when the Revolutionary Conquerors were a no show for their scheduled game on Sunday at the Ambergris Stadium, and the Dolphins finished their season with 24 pts good enuf for 5th place, but not good enuf to make the playoffs.
